Background
Standard headset adapter cables/boxes for the TM-D710GA (alsoTM-D710A/TM-V71A) do not allow to use the handheld microphone's number pad (necessary for VFO direct entry) at the same time as the headset.
This Project
This adapter box plugs into the radio with a 1:1 RJ45-RJ45 cable and breaks that out to a standard handheld microphone, headset microphone (3.5mm) and Push To Talk (PTT) switch (1/4"). On-board, a solid state audio switch automatically switches between the two microphone inputs depending on which PTT switch (handheld mic or external) is pressed.
Why?
Now you can grab the handheld mic for a quick transmission or sit down with a headset and handheld PTT switch while still direct-dialing VFO frequencies. You can also transmit DTMF codes while having a headset attached.
What does it not do?
This only covers inputs to the radio (keypad, microphone, PTT). To use a headset to listen to received audio, you will need an appropriate adapter for your headset. I like to use a dual mono male to stereo female adapter so I can hear one receive channel per ear.
How can I get one?
I might sell them at some point, still working out the paperwork for that. However, if you want to build one for yourself, the design and manufacturing files are available on the github page and are licensed under the TAPR Open Hardware License, so you can order your own boards and enclosure, and assemble one yourself. Let me know if you do!
